2021 Wrap-Up
I can not believe two years have passed. I feel like I have not done much since Covid hit. As someone who loves to travel, it pains me that I have not left North America in over two years. Despite not traveling as much as I would like, I have had an enjoyable 2021. It did have its ups and downs, but I would say the ups outweigh the downs for sure! One of my most anticipated adventures was to visit Sable Island. Since it is a part of Nova Scotia I could get there without fear of needing to be isolated afterwards. Unfortunately all my attempts to get there were canceled from the island being too dry to land a plane and too much fog, and then my rescheduled flight happened to be when we had our hurricane. Perhaps I can try again in 2022. Third times the charm right? I am sure Sable Island would have been one of my favourite adventures, but as I was unable to go this year I will share my five top adventures of 2021 that did not get canceled!
Is it a top adventure list in Nova Scotia if you don’t include Cape Breton? I have gone to Cape Breton every year for the past three years and I never grow tired of this beautiful part of my province. The landscape is just incredible and is home to some of my favourite hikes. This year my family and I completed the Pollet’s Cove hike. While challenging, it was a lovely hike. Plus, I may not have got to see the wild horses of Sable Island, but I did get to see the horses of Pollet’s Cove! We also did the Skyline Trail again which was beautiful as always.
My third time embarking on this hike. This one is very difficult. While worth it I can’t say I love every aspect of it. The views are indeed spectacular but the muddy trail is not so much. As much as I did have a good time, I think it would take some convincing to get me to do it a fourth time!
This was one of the coolest places I have ever stayed and I loved that I got to experience it with my friend. I love finding places to stay that are out of the ordinary. Every caboose is different, so I would love to stay there again next year but in a different caboose. Also loved that it is next to the Trans Canada Trail. We only stayed one night so there is also a lot around Tatamagouche that we did not have time to do.
McNabs Island
My family had visited McNabs island in 2020 but I had been working and thus unable to join. This time however I was off. It was fun to take the boat over to the island and to explore with my family. Going through the old ruins made me feel like Indiana Jones. I would definitely go back. It is also a nice little walk and there is a lot to explore that it would take a few trips to see the majority of the ruins.
The finale of my year. This trip was one of the most last minute trips I have ever planned. Because of Covid I wanted to wait as long as possible before booking. This was also the biggest solo trip I have ever done. Before New York, the only place I had gone myself (not in a tour group) was Ottawa. I am glad to say that I had a fantastic time. New York is an incredible city and was a blast to explore solo. I especially enjoyed seeing Hamilton on Broadway, ice skating at the Rockefeller Center, watching the New York Rangers, and just walking around the city!
Looking back at this year's highlights, I realize it could have been a lot worse. It just seems terrible when I think that I had initially hoped to take a month off to go to Europe and hike Mont Blanc, visit Disneyland Paris, see Greece, etc. Next year I hope travel opens up even more. I did manage to squeeze New York in at the end of the year, which was fantastic. I really needed to get out of the province. On the plus side, my finances are doing great. Four percent complete on my goal to reach one million by retirement. I also read 70 books this year, watched some great movies and television shows, and discovered two new favourite bands; Maneskin and The Amazing Devil.
So here is hoping I can leave the country in 2022. If I am able I would love to go to Iceland, California, and maybe even Peru.
